Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to serve as an elected member of the District of Columbia State Board of Education. As you may know, the residents of the District of Columbia will be casting their ballots to elect nine members to the State Board of Education on November 4th. I look forward to continuing to serve on the Board and continuing the work that my colleagues and I have begun. For this reason, I am asking for your vote and support to return me to the Board as the Ward 4 member of the State Board of Education. Following my election to the DCPS Board of Education in the May 2007 special election, my colleagues and I completed a blitz program that improved conditions in dozens of schools. We also partnered with the Sports and Entertainment Commission to build premium quality fields so our student athletes can have the very best facilities. Since June 12, 2007 when we began the State Board of Education, we have created and approved standards in health that will help us confront the epidemic of HIV/AIDS that plagues the District. We have approved standards in PE and the Arts to promote well rounded students. We have created Home Schooling standards so our home educators have a framework within which to educate their students, and we have improved the District's definition of Highly Qualified teacher to allow some of our most talented teachers to serve more of our students. Going forward I am focused on: Improving our early childhood programs so every child has a strong foundation when they enter elementary school Creating a system that respects our special education population by meeting the needs of every child in the District of Columbia Transforming our educator quality standards to encourage the best and brightest teachers to teach in our city’s public schools Promoting the importance of literacy so that all residents recognize that we all have a role in building a more literate city Thank you for your support. With your help – we will make a difference.
Sincerely,
Sekou J. Biddle, MEd |
